LAS VEGAS — A Nevada man was arrested Tuesday after he killed the family dog during a fight over money with his wife, police said.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said Russell Kelly’s wife called police around 1 a.m. after he reportedly shot their pug, Pooka, with a 9 mm handgun, KVVU reported. The couple was arguing about a pyramid scheme, KTNV reported.

Pooka was lying in her bed when she was shot, KTNV reported. The couple's son was also in the room at the time of the shooting.

According to police, Kelly said Pooka attacked him. His wife said she "nipped" at him, KVVU reported. She told police Kelly put Pooka in a trash bag and left the house. Kelly told police he used a trash bag to wrap around her leg, KVVU reported. Kelly returned to the house a short time later without Pooka. Kelly told police she jumped from his car after he left the house, KVVU reported. Investigators later found Pooka dead in a park.

Kelly was arrested and charged with two counts of assault domestic violence with use of deadly weapon, discharging a gun into an occupied structure and torturing or killing an animal, according to jail records. He was in jail on $100,000 bond.
