Orange County, FL — “Schools out for summer!” Well, not if senate bill 1564 passes, and your school district participates.
The ‘Year-round School Pilot Program’ would create a full 12 month school session for a period of 4 school years beginning with a specific school year.
According to the bill, “Beginning with the 2024-2025 school year...The purpose of the 24 program is for the Department of Education to assist school districts in establishing a year-round school program within at least one elementary school in a district and to study the issues, benefits, and schedule options for instituting year round school programs for all students.”
School districts can apply to participate in the program if the bill passes. It requires the Commissioner of Education to select five school districts to participate in the program, providing requirements for participating school districts on how they can participate.
The sponsor of the bill is Orange County’s District 17 Senator Linda Stewart.
The bill includes grades Pre-K through 12 and passed unanimously by the Senate Education Pre-K through 12 Committee.
It moves on to the Appropriations Education Committee.
If the bill moves forward, it will take effect on July 1st, 2023.
